About Will:will-meridian

I’m a husband, father and photographer based out of Wollongong on the east coast of Australia. I host landscape photography workshops around the world and shoot for tourism clients and brands. My main passion is being outside, getting lost in the wilderness.

What was the major turning point in your recovery from depression?

Struggling with mental illness, I remember feeling so helpless, as if my world was surrounded by darkness. It was a heavy burden to carry, to wake up and feel on my shoulders everyday.

It was actually after I picked up a camera that my life changed dramatically, as I began to see the world in a completely different way. This encouraged me to get outside, keep active and really took my mind off things.

What are some things that really helped?

Talking about it:

  • Definitely speaking up about the problems I was facing, particularly to those closest to me.

Going outside:

  • Getting outside and going out with family or friends also helped a lot. It was definitely something I found hard to do but whenever I did it was worth it.

What advice would you give to other guys fighting depression?

Don’t be ashamed or think you’re alone. Speak up and reach out, people are going to be more supportive than you think.
