Tommy’s Story

Tommy-profile

What was the major turning point in your recovery from depression?

For me it was when I finally admitted to myself that something needed to change before it was too late. It was not easy to work up the courage, but talking about it with my friends and family and the response and support I received was a tremendous relief. I feel that being able to be open about it with myself and with my family and friends was a huge step on the way upwards.

What are some things that really helped?

Reaching out;

  • The support I received when I finally reached out, and the knowledge that I did not need to hide it all inside anymore, was a monumental relief.

Trying to understand myself;.

  • Learning to know myself, trying to understand how I function, and actively working with CBT has been a tremendous help.

Slowing down;

  • Some days are good, some days are bad. I’ve learned to not put too much pressure on myself and take each day as it comes.

What advice would you give to other guys fighting depression?

Reach out. Fighting depression is much easier with the support of other people, instead of trying to do it alone. Know that there is always someone to listen and support you, be it friends, family or a professional.
